Psychoacoustics is the study of how the human auditory system perceives sound — not just physically, but cognitively and emotionally. The ear and brain together form a remarkably sensitive analysis system, tuned by evolution to detect threat, presence, and meaning in acoustic environments. That sensitivity works for and against recorded audio.

Degraded audio triggers threat response.When background noise, distortion, or inconsistent levels force the brain to work harder to extract the signal, cognitive load increases and emotional access narrows. The listener is no longer inside the story — they’re fighting to hear it. This is not a subjective response. It is a measurable physiological effect.

The brain rates credibility through sound. Modern audio restoration operates at the spectral level — analyzing the frequency content of a recording in time slices of milliseconds, identifying what belongs to the intended signal and what doesn’t, and reconstructing the signal beneath the noise. This is not noise reduction in the traditional sense. It is spectral surgery.

iZotope RX is the industry standard for this work, used in post-production facilities, broadcast networks, and film finishing houses worldwide. Its AI-trained modules — De-noise, De-clip, De-reverb, De-hum, De-click, Voice De-noise, Mouth De-noise — each target a specific class of audio artifact with models trained on millions of hours of real-world recordings.

The distinction between AI processing and simple noise reduction is important. Traditional noise reduction gates or attenuates based on amplitude — it turns things down. Spectral repair identifies and reconstructs. It can recover a voice from behind RF interference, restore a clipped transient, and remove 60Hz hum without touching the harmonic content of the sound around it.

Loudness standards and delivery specs
LUFS, true peak, and why they matter

LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) is the measurement standard for perceived loudness in broadcast, streaming, and film delivery. Unlike peak meters, which measure instantaneous amplitude, LUFS integrates loudness over time — reflecting how the human auditory system actually experiences volume.

Every delivery platform and submission specification uses a loudness target for a reason: when all content is normalized to the same perceived loudness, the dynamic range within your mix — the quiet moments and the loud ones — carries meaning instead of just reflecting how hard your recorder was driven.

True peak is a separate measurement — the highest instantaneous amplitude in a digital signal after sample-rate conversion. True peak limits prevent intersample clipping that would otherwise distort on playback systems that reconstruct audio between samples. Festival and broadcast specs typically require a true peak ceiling of –1dBTP or –2dBTP.

Frequency, entrainment, and therapeutic audio
Signal integrity for sound healing practitioners

For practitioners using sound as a therapeutic or somatic tool — guided meditation, sound baths, brainwave entrainment, brainspotting support, somatic regulation — the integrity of the audio signal is not aesthetic. It is functional.

Binaural beats require precise left-right channel separation and accurate frequency reproduction. If the left channel carries a 200Hz tone and the right carries a 210Hz tone, the brain perceives a 10Hz beat frequency — the entrainment target. Noise floor contamination, channel bleed, or tuning inaccuracy disrupts this effect at the physiological level.

Solfeggio frequencies require accurate tuning alignment. The difference between 528Hz and a slightly detuned approximation is not audible as a pitch error — but it removes the frequency from its intended resonance relationship. Premix offers tuning alignment as part of frequency healing finishing, with options for 440Hz standard or 432Hz tuning.

In brainspotting and somatictherapeutic settings, audio is used to support bilateral stimulation and nervous system regulation.
